Note reading quiz
A note appears on the staff. Name it with a letter, press its key on the keyboard below, or play it on your piano. The ones you get wrong appear more often until you master them.
Reading notes faster
Most people begin by counting from a note they recognize, which is fine at first. Once you have a few reference points, like middle C, the G on the second line of the treble staff (the clef curls around it), or the F on the fourth line of the bass staff (between the clef’s two dots), you can move faster. Instead of starting from the bottom each time, read new notes as steps or skips from these landmarks.
The old memory tricks help with the rest. On the treble staff, the lines from the bottom up are E G B D F (Every Good Boy Does Fine) and the spaces are FACE. For the bass staff, the lines are G B D F A (Good Boys Do Fine Always), while the spaces spell A C E G (All Cows Eat Grass).
Using your own piano
With a digital piano or MIDI keyboard connected to a computer via USB, click Connect piano and allow MIDI if the browser asks for it. Chrome, Edge, and Opera handle this, and so can Firefox after you give it permission. Then play each note where it sits on the keyboard. Any octave counts, and after each answer the quiz lights up the exact key.
On a phone or tablet, tap the letters or keys on screen. On an iPhone or iPad, use the Listen button with the microphone instead, and play one note at a time near the device.
